Most issues we see come down to these, in this order:
- Not on Apple Silicon. Parlin needs an M1 or later Mac on macOS 14.6 or newer. Intel Macs are not supported.
- The emoji picker pops up when you hold Fn.On a Mac the Fn key is also the 🌐 Globe key, and macOS gives it its own job by default. Set it to do nothing: System Settings, then Keyboard, then “Press 🌐 key to”, then pick “Do Nothing”. Now holding Fn only talks to Parlin.
- Accessibility permission.Push-to-talk needs it to paste into other apps. System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Accessibility, then toggle Parlin on.
- Microphone permission.System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Microphone.
- Speech model not downloaded. Parlin fetches its speech engine (Parakeet for English, Whisper for other languages) on first launch. If transcription does nothing, open Settings sidebar, then Speech to text, pick a model, and wait for the download.
- Cleanup model not downloaded. The first time you launch the app it fetches a small language model so cleanup can run on-device. If that download failed (no internet, blocked by a firewall), dictation still works, cleanup falls back to raw text. Settings sidebar, then Cleanup, then Retry download.
