Voice to text on your Mac, into any app.
Voice to text on a Mac means holding a key, talking, and having the words appear where your cursor is. macOS ships basic dictation, and it is fine for a sentence. For real work you want an app that runs the speech engine on the Mac itself, cleans up the filler and punctuation, and types into Mail, Slack, a browser, or a terminal without copying and pasting. What macOS gives you for free
Apple's built-in dictation (press the microphone key, or Fn twice on older setups) turns speech into text in most text fields. It is fast, it is free, and for a short message it works. Its limits show up in longer dictation: it types what you said, filler and all, it cannot hold a long thought without dropping words, punctuation is hit or miss, and there is no way to teach it your vocabulary or have it tidy the result.
What to look for in a voice-to-text app
Four things separate a good Mac dictation app from a demo.
- Where the audio goes. On-device engines keep your voice on the Mac; cloud engines upload it. For client work, health notes, or anything under NDA, on-device is the only honest choice.
- Accuracy on your speech. Ask for a published benchmark, not an adjective. Parlin's English engine is measured at about 98% on the LibriSpeech test-clean set.
- Cleanup. Raw transcripts read like a transcript. A cleanup step removes filler, fixes punctuation, and keeps your meaning, ideally on the Mac too.
